The "REFER TO MAKER" stamp on a check is one that confuses many people. It is a broad term used by banks when they have determined that a check cannot be paid, but there may be sufficient funds available to pay the item. In many cases the bank may suspect fraud and have attempted to contact the account holder and could not reach them, so the item was returned. If you receive this stamp please contact your customer to discuss this return. In many cases they can call their bank and have them place a note so the item can be reprocessed.
